My name is Shela Baantjer.  I am a small town girl, having grown up in the big outdoors, into a music loving family. Aside from loving music, there has always been a great love for learning, sharing that learning, sharing of ourselves.  Music, to me, is a language.  I love learning more about this language and teaching this language. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance, I completed a Master’s degree in Music Technology. The combination has been a broad abundance of music making.

As an instructor of music, I also enjoy teaching the English language to learners of varying ages as a Second Language. Growing up in a bilingual home, and then adding a third language has been more rewarding to my music and language journey than I could have imagined. What a wealth of beauty the world has in store, and what beautiful forms of communication.

As a musician, I view the world with more artistic lenses, and that has caused me to think of all topics as an art form. Cooking is one of those art forms that excites and interests me.  I think of food as a way to get to know other peoples and cultures, which altogether is very exciting.

MIS Capstone

Masters of Interdisciplinary Studies – Professional Communication and Online Teaching.  I have chosen to do the Capstone Project – creating 4 online courses two bachelor courses (music/language) and two masters courses (music/language).  These two tracks will provide me with the best possible way of creating courses for language learners and musicians at the undergraduate and master’s levels.

I hope to use these courses to get teaching opportunities at varying colleges/universities.

Preliminary Literature Review Topic and Methodology

Currently the literature and methodology are coming from ‘Intercultural Communication in Contexts’ (Martin/Nakayama, 2010) for my language research and ‘Tonal Harmony’ (Kostka/Payne, 2004) for my music research.  As these are just the beginning of the research needed to complete a capstone project, the basis of information from these two sources is a good foundation for all language learners and musicians.

Beginning with these two sources will provide a good basis for creating an ESL/music course suited to the needs of an undergraduate student beginning their college education while the ESL/music course for the graduate level will be created to help further their higher education to professional working needs.
